Open house A very enthusiastic and appreciative standing room only crowd passed up the gorgeous spring weather on Sunday, April 3, to hear noted geriatrician, Dr. Juergen Bludau, speak on the anti-aging movement, geriatric medicine, and his latest book, Aging, But Never Old.  The presentation and book signing were followed by an Open House of both the Independent Living and Residential Care communities.

My Life, My Health”

Thirteen residents have just completed a six week chronic disease self management program entitled “My Life, My Health.”  Led by Mary Celeste Brown, Geralyn Kolakowski and Judy Jose-Roddy, the course provided instruction and support to individuals living with chronic conditions or caring for someone who does.  Some of the main topics included managing symptoms, communicating effectively with health care professionals, lessening frustration and fatigue, building confidence, making daily tasks easier, and generally getting more out of life!

Here are some comments from the group’s participants:

“Action Plans are determined by the participants themselves, and the Action Plans worked well.  They gave you something specific to work on during the week.”   Esther

“The Action Plans pushed me to do what I needed to do each week.”   Harriet

“I feel more comfortable in sharing things with my friends here – worry, pressure, etc.”   Peg

“I learned here that others are happy to help, not sorry.”   Bea

We’re Off to See the Wizard…

Sophia Snow Place got caught up in a twister and was transported to the magical world of OZ on April 14. The main areas were transformed into Muchkinland and the Emerald City with the help of the creative activities assistant Joan Hurley. Planned activities included Munchkins and Coffee, Wizard of OZ trivia, and a party in the Emerald City.  Staff and residents dressed up like character from the famous movie, adding to the fun and excitement of the day.
